R & W – Research Portfolio Entry #2

In the article “A survey of community garden in upstate New York: Implications for health promotion and community development,” Donna Armstrong discusses the benefits of community gardens. Throughout the article, Armstrong claims that community gardens provoke healthy eating, vibrant community activity (e.g., exercising, gardening, and public events), and promote psychological well-being. By conducting the survey, Armstrong hopes to generate information that will facilitate the healthy development of urban communities.

After performing the survey, Armstrong comes to the conclusion that community gardens can goad change and opportunity. For example, as Armstrong states in the discussion part of the survey, “Community garden programs suggest a valuable source of community members who may be willing to be engaged in these types of health promotion activity,” (Donna Armstrong, Dec 2000). While performing the survey, Armstrong observes that public local parks empower people to maintain food systems (e.g., local organic food markets), provide job training programs, and increase population exercise levels.
