Photo Journal #2                                                                               03/19/13

Perhaps a good example of a New York business that is struggling to keep up with the IT world competition is libraries. Sadly, public and school libraries are having trouble “Conduct[ing] [their] blooming in the noise and whip of the [digital age] whirlwind” (reference). Like the NYPL Lerroy St. Library (pictured above) many old small libraries have become almost empty. Within the past 2 years, for example, the Lerroy St. Library has transformed into recreational area for kindergarteners and a forum for loud chat, after decades of serving as a place for quiet research and reading. Due to the rise of digital books or online holdings, the library collection diminished significantly. What used to be a place filled with dozens of rows of books has become a vacant room of straggling bookshelves.
