Our trip to the Queens Museum was different from our other trips in many ways.

One, we travelled together to the Museum because it's quite a walk from the train station through Flushing Meadows Park over to the Museum and many of the students didn't think they would find it on their own. We met at Guttman and took the train together--a straight shot on the 7 Train from Bryant Park.

We walked through an icy park and took pictures at the Unisphere before going to the Museum. This trip was different also in that we were getting a guided tour of the Museum that was to align with our week-long study of photography. The Queens Museum was just renovated and reopened in early November. We have been working on establishing a partnership with them--their education department is amazing and filled with smart people who know and love Queens, New York City, and its students.

We started in this amazing lobby where our educator, Leigh, talked to us about the space and then we moved onto the panoramic of New York City which might be the most amazing installation ever. The students and myself were blown away by the sheer size of it as well as the detail. Leigh had a laser pointer and could point out students' houses, etc., on the grid. Incredible.

We looked at photographs and posters from the World's Fairs that was held in Queens, New York City. Last, we did a collage activity of blending photographs to shift the meaning.

An added bonus this day was that my 4 year old son had a non-attendance day for pre-kindergarten so he came to the Museum with us (that's the little guy in the photos). Both the students and the Queens Museum folks were so kind to him. He's still talking about the day.
